French Girl Names

Bonjour, Name Warehouse readers! Many people have dreamy views of the city of Paris and the rest of the famously romantic country of France, so what better way to commemorate heritage or find a name with stunning imagery than to consult French baby names? The picture of blinking lights shining inside the gorgeous Eiffel tower as a stunning vibrant pink sunset paints the horizon behind is just too good to resist! Today, I’ve compiled a list of 10 thoroughly French girl names to make you swoon. Delicate and sweet, girl names claiming roots in the romantic City of Lights are notorious for their dainty and feminine sounds that have captivated growing families across the world for decades. Oui, Oui, let’s begin!

Amelie- With Amelia, a frilly German name, darting to #7 in 2019, there’s no telling what her French sister name and Emily sound-alike has the potential to do. Although this international beauty meaning “work” ranks at only #753, the combination of Emily’s much loved pronunciation (Am-el-ee), and Amelia’s striking appearance will surely send her rocketing up the charts. Not to mention that she’s French through and through, with hints of British coming through as well thanks to Emily.

Elodie- Ugh...I absolutely cannot believe that Elodie only ranks at a meager #862! Pronounced Ella-Dee, there is no reason that this daintily French moniker should be so low, particularly with the beloved nickname Ellie attached. The only factor that may be preventing Elodie from sounding fresh is her connection to Melody, although Melody actually rose in popularity last year, perhaps paving the way for a big jump for Elodie in 2020.

Genevieve- Names really don’t get more French than this. Genevieve is bubbling over with adorable short forms (Evie, Genny, and Vivi to name just a few), and possesses an elegant and refined quality that has attracted parents enough to earn Genevieve her #168. Timeless, historic, and a name that will grow with a child, Genevieve is a beautiful French name for your little belle.

Adeline- If you’re looking for something on-trend with a slight French undertone, Adeline is for you! With the Addies mounting in popularity, Adeline feels perfectly in tune with current trends, but with the subtlest Parisian twist that has called to many over the past few years. Adeline has shot up to #91, a lovely choice outside of her many pronunciations that may annoy your child in the future, including Add-uh-lin, Add-uh-line, and Add-uh-leen.

Delphine- Call me biased, and I certainly am, but I think that Delphine is a stunning French name that has a certain fluidity and femininity that is undeniably beautiful. She’s not even cracking the top 1000, perfect for a family that’s stumped on finding a truly rare name that doesn’t sound the part. A nature name, thanks to her connections to the delphinium and dolphins, and with the iconic flow and -ine ending that French girl names are known for, she’s practically destined to land in the top 1000 one of these years.

Fleur- Although she appears a little too heavily restricted to French speakers to be on this list, her pronunciation is actually quite simple: flur. A one-syllable wonder with a dainty flair and a resemblance to the word flower, her meaning when translated, Fleur hasn’t quite left the popularity launch pad. And while I’ll admit that she seems very French for a family without that heritage, I think it’s only a matter of time until some celebaby comes along and catapults Fleur into the top 1000, regardless of origin.

Josephine- And again, the iconic -ine returns in the form of a feminine variation of the classic Joseph, currently soaring at #89! Josephine has begun her revival arc, dormant for 100 years and now starting to become a family favorite again. Strong, firm, and sophisticated, Josephine feels new again, and her French finesse seems to ignite a whole new spark in parents searching for a name.

Esme- It’s no question why Esme, pronounced Ez-may, has been launched into the suburbs of the bustling popularity city, at #433. Although the meaning “beloved” and the traditional French quality have gotten her far, the complicated pronunciation may be blocking her from reaching the peak of popularity. However, all pronunciation issues aside, Esme is a striking name with unique sounds that distinguish her from other girl names.

Rosalie- A sweet, youthful update on the more sophisticated and classic Rose, Rosalie modernizes a traditional moniker with a French tweak. What could be better? At #208, Rosalie is rising fast, but feels like an adorable collision between a Kinsley-Tensley-Brynlee style and a Rose-Alice-Matilda style that works beautifully for a couple split style-wise or a family trying to add a name that blends two pre-existing styles in a family.

Eloise- Spunky, sassy, and yet another French route to Ellie, Eloise merges Ella with Louise and creates a clunky vintage name that somehow feels right at home in the 21st century. Eloise has risen to #151 in 2019, making her a hot name to watch. She’s nostalgic, thanks to the book series about a mischievous young Eloise stirring up trouble at the Plaza Hotel, and makes for a gorgeous and youthful name for any personality.

That concludes my list of 10 striking French girl names loaded with Parisian poise and the utmost elegance. I hope you found a name or two that caught your eye, and maybe even discovered a whole new favorite. Au revoir!

Sincerely,

~Delphina Moon
