Name Profile- Celeste

A name that resides in the crossroad of popular and unique, Celeste is elegant and almost other-worldly. A Latin name with a stunning meaning and equal beautiful sound, she is just starting to get the attention that many believe she deserves. But is Celeste truly as beautiful as many people say she is? Or have her unpleasant sounds spoiled her whimsical touch? Today, we’re taking an in-depth look at the name Celeste, including an origin story, popularity history, namesakes, and even some opinions at the end. I hope you enjoy this, and let’s begin!

Pros

Where to start with a name so stunning as Celeste? It’s truly fascinating that she hasn’t yet taken off, and fantastic for parents who want a rare name that doesn’t sound the part. At #374, Celeste barely makes the cut for a familiar name, and yet, she’s simply spelled and just, well, familiar. This Latin beauty hasn’t been tainted by overuse, by any means, but she’s also not pushed to the bottom of the barrel either. Not only that, Celeste is an established name with a lovely history. She originated from the Latin word Caelestis, which means “heavenly.” This word was tailored into the Celeste we know today, which also has the dreamy and sweet meaning of heavenly that is an adorable meaning for many families and their little girls. And the meaning matches the ethereal feeling behind Celeste. The name's effortless fluidity and hushed sounds make her feel whimsical and fantastical, a name that almost seems too dainty and delicate for anything other than a fantasy novel. This otherworldly gorgeous quality has drawn many families to Celeste. Another positive aspect of Celeste is her spunkier nickname Cece if the dainty and delicate sounds of Celeste don’t suit an energetic little girl. Cece blends in much more as well, giving your daughter the opportunity to have a more common nickname if she wishes.

Celeste, thanks to the word celestial, also feels space-related. A feminine space name that fits in with Andromeda, Luna, and Nova, Celeste could complete a space-y sibset or just offer a lovely choice that ties into the natural world. Finally, Celeste also has a nostalgic touch that may appeal to parents who are reminded of their own childhood when thinking of the Babar The Elephant books, in which Babar has a wife called Celeste, and the two live in a town called Celesteville. The series has roughly 50 books, written between 1931-2014, so it’s likely that some parents who passed the name on to their daughter’s had the story in mind.

Cons

Celeste happens to rhyme with a handful of unpleasant words. Slap an M over the C and you get one of them, which is indisputably negative, and whose sounds may turn searching parent’s away from Celeste. There’s also incest and congest, which aren’t pleasant either. Given the wide variety of unwanted sound-alikes, it’s no wonder that the sounds of Celeste aren’t beloved or widely used, which brings me to my next point. It’s difficult to find Celeste’s sounds high on the popularity charts, because they’re so unwanted in today’s name scene. Not only do they resemble some other words that may not be the most lovely associations with the name, they’re just not on trend. And despite what parents may say about wanting names regardless of their trendiness, we do love to follow the crowd. Theodore or Jaxon or Wilder was completely unappealing to many people before their nephew received the name, or they read an article about how great it was. We do rely on the crowd to gauge whether or not our favorites are going to be of a certain style or popularity, and Celeste’s sounds being off-trend and overall negative with sound-alikes make her chances of gaining relatively low.

And think about what I just said: Celeste’s. Try saying out loud. It’s difficult! And parents often prioritize functionality over style, so choosing a name that’s so difficult to say in possessive form could be a dealbreaker for many. “Is this notebook your’s or Celeste’s?” Those fluid and flowy sounds may not come out of a toddler or young child’s mouth well either, and the lulling sounds and abundant S’s make the name hard to say without defaulting to just “Celes” or trying too hard to pronounce the T and have the name come out choppy and strained.

Predictions For Celeste:

On one hand, Celeste is stunning. Striking, gorgeous, and flowing, Celeste’s beauty is evident. But when it comes to practicality issues with the names’ many hard-to-pronounce Ss and the not-so-wonderful sound-alikes, I’m still not sure how I feel about the name. However, I do think I might have an idea of how parents and the naming community may feel about Celeste. So, I think that the name Celeste will begin to rise, thanks to both our fascination with space-related names and Celeste’s elegant and ethereal beauty.

Sincerely,

~Delphina Moon
