Names Inspired By Music

Updated: Aug 4, 2020

We take inspiration for what we call our children from many sources, such as nature with picks like Willow and Sage, surnames with choices like Carter and Madison, and yes, music. Whether music has special significance for you and your partner, or you're trying to complete an already musically-oriented sibset with another lyrical moniker, one of these names inspired by music may be perfect for the newest addition to your family. Most of these names I’d recommend for a little girl, but some are so obscure that you’re free to determine which gender you would like to bear the name. Now, for the top music-orientated names I find the most usable!

Lyric- A musical word name with a pleasing sound, Lyric holds strong at #323 in the US for team pink. Although this adorable Grecian name is much more popular as a girl's name (323) than a boy's name (937), friendly nickname Ricky gives Lyric a slightly more masculine short form in case a boy Lyric doesn’t like having a name that leans more feminine.

Coda- An Italian term referencing the end of a piece of music, this unisex appellation has yet to chart for either gender, despite a familiar sound and simple spelling. Although Coda is an alternative Italian spelling to Koda, a Japanese surname name that ranks at #714 as a first name for boys, it follows the same sounds as Cora and Cara, making this name a possibility for girls, too.

Piper- This bold and spunky selection has musical roots, thanks to the meaning “flute/pipe player.” Similar to Lyric, Piper is a unisex name that ranks much higher with the ladies, but the recent rise of this occupational surname for girls has made it an unlikely choice for a boy. Peaking at the #67 spot in 2016, Piper and sassy short form Pippy are following in the footsteps of the more popular, but also occupational, Harper.

Aria- Aria is a remarkably trendy girl's name that has rocketed up the charts in just a few short years and has earned herself a spot next to the ultra-trendy Luna and Harper. At #19 according to the most recent SSA data, this Italian moniker meaning “song,” can attribute most of her recent success to the heroine of Game Of Thrones, Arya Stark, and Aria Montgomery of Pretty Little Liars. If you don’t mind popularity, and you want something a bit more subtle than Harmony or Lyric, Aria is the one for you! With possible nicknames Ari and Ria, Aria seems like a modern update of Arianna.

Medley- Although this untouched girl's name may at first appear like a typo of Melody, Medley does fit in quite well with the -ley girl names of today while still being her own unique name. The word medley means a mix or combination of songs, a meaning which isn’t inherently good or bad. If you’re searching for a name no child will have, but don’t want your child to stick out like a sore thumb, Medley is an ideal solution. She can camouflage in a sea of Oakleys and Everlys, but remain the only Medley in her class.

Serenade- A stunning elaboration on biblical Sarah, Serenade has an abundance of short forms and meanings, one of which is a complimentary and calm tune. A sister name to Seraphina and Serenity, Serenade hasn’t placed in the top 1,000 yet, making it a very unique choice. However, I find this name fluid and sweet.

Reed- Although not quite as monumental of an association as Lyric or Serenade, Reed as a musical name refers to the piece of wood that woodwind instruments use to play. However, Reed is a name of many associations, so if nature or a love of reading speak more to you, Reed has you covered, as well. At #375 in 2018, Reed is the perfect different-but-not-weird name for a baby boy.

Sonnet- Like Reed, Sonnet hits several different associations: poetry and music. Despite a sonnet being a piece of poetry, the name Sonnet means “little song,” giving this name double meaning. I would use Sonnet only for girls due to the rise of -et names like Violet and Juliet, but since no one is using this Italian word name, either gender could bear this name. Cutesy nicknames Nettie and Sonny are also big bonuses, and these give your little one some flexibility in the future.

With honorable mention going to Cadence and Jazz, that concludes the music-inspired names I find the most promising for parents today. And whether music related names resonate with you or not, I hope you found one of these musical monikers pleasant to the ear.

Sincerely,

~Delphina Moon
