Names That Mean “Happy”

A name with a solid meaning is always in style. Whether a religious meaning is ideal for your family or one of hope is perfect after a tragedy in your life, meanings are very personal and entirely subjective. But one meaning that is incredibly versatile, one that almost everyone agrees is a wonderful one, is “happy.” That’s why I’ve pulled together some of my favorite names that mean “happy” for your cute little bundle and the happiness and joy that your child will bring. Before we get started, I’d like to thank the Name Warehouse family for the brilliant ideas thrown my way for the birthday contest. The contest is closed for any series ideas, but if a single article idea springs to mind, don’t hesitate to submit them! Let’s begin!

Gwyneth- Sure, there’s Gwyneth Paltrow, which makes this name a bit less fit for a little one. But if you can put the Gwyneth Paltrow association aside or even learn to enjoy it, then Gwyneth turns into an elegant Welsh name, a name that has sophistication for days and brings to mind castles and medieval headdresses. The -th ending of Lilith is unique and eye-catching, and the cute little nickname Gwyn/Gwen really tops off the maturity of the name Gwyneth. Add the sweet meaning of “blessed and happy” and you have a gorgeous baby name perfect for plenty of use. Gwyneth currently ranks at #1351, a lovely rarity but also a well-known and familiar name due to the celebrity.

Asher- Asher takes the cool sounds of 90s Ashley and uses that fiery sound in collaboration with Parker and Carter to make Asher, a biblical boy name that is undoubtedly among one of the coolest boy names with history in the top 50. That’s right, this boy name ranks at #43, a name that is effortlessly slick and cool. His sounds are top of the line, his slim two syllables makes him a perfect fit for mainstream popularity, and he has the “cool boy” vibes that names like Brayden, Jayden, and Brandon are famous for having. But even though Asher feels cool, his sounds are softer, a lovely fit for today’s age of Elijah and Sebastian being among the most popular boy names. In addition, he has the same wonderful meaning as Gwyneth: “blessed and happy.”

Tate- A softer, more gender neutral take on Nate, Tate is short and sweet, a single syllable name that, at least in my opinion, makes a perfect brother for a Finn. As for associations, there’s tater tots, but to me, that’s definitely a positive thing. Tater tots are delicious, you can’t blame me! Given Tate’s surname style and his ideal sweet spot familiar popularity (I mean, #438? Perfection.) He’d also be a wonderful brother name to Reid, now that I’m thinking about familiar baby names… But really, Tate has surname style glimmer, ideal popularity, attractive sounds, and pairs well with so many other boy and girl names. Plus, Tate means “cheerful,” an upbeat meaning for a perky little name.

Alair- Blair gets her turn in the spotlight, so why can’t Alair get a chance? She’s fluid and sweet, but tailored and not too feminine to turn parents craving surname names for their daughters away. Less than 5 children have received the name Alair in 2019, making her truly rare if you’re in the mood for a name that has very little chance of repeating, although sister name Blair ranks at #404. Alair derives as a briefer version of Hilary, a more modern adaptation with a bit more dramatic flair and tailored qualities. Finally, Alair means “happy and cheerful,” a delightful gift for your daughter. Although I will admit that Alair sounds a bit like “a lair,” I think that she would still make a beautiful name, first or middle, for your little one.

Bliss- A word name with a gentle sound and a brilliantly joyous connotation, Bliss is pretty much the epitome of a happy name. A name that ranks at #3491, Bliss is delightful just to say. Given that she’s a word name in a world where we adore wild nouns for our children’s names, Bliss doesn’t seem all too out of the box at all! With the light and airy sounds of names like Felicity, Bliss makes for a lovely bold middle name or an out-there but definitely wearable first name. Simple spelling, simple pronunciation, not incredibly infantilizing, and an obvious and positive meaning of “happiness.”

Alanis- A name famous thanks to Alanis Morisette, a former “it” girl and singer, Alanis has a special gleam to her. She sparkles with the allure of show business, with mystery and interest. This feminine form of the male name Alan, who was quite popular in his glory days, Alanis could be perfect for you if you’re a huge fan of Ms. Morisette or have a special Alan in your life that you were hoping to honor, yet are expecting a baby girl instead. Alanis currently ranks at #1936, just a little bit away from the top 1000, a comfortable popularity that tells parents that it’s probable that Alanis will never meet another girl her age with the name, but doesn’t ensure strange faces from everyone she encounters. This English name means “cheerful and handsome,” a name which predicts beauty and happiness for your child.

Felix- Vintage and spunky with a bit of a nerdy touch, Felix is one of the most 2021 names I can think of. He has the touch of nerdy retro energy that I and plenty of other families adore, yet adds an aspect of coolness with that -x ending. He has a unique Fe- beginning that he shares with the word “feline,” sadly dooming Felix to a name grandma gives her cats for a few too many years. Thankfully, Felix is coming back, one child at a time, as parents start to see the value in his sounds outside of their kittens, maybe even thanks to his meaning “happy and lucky”. Felix ranks at #222 right now, and I expect him to continue to rise as he has been in the past few years.

That’s all for now, friends. I hope you found some happy names to play around with in coming days. Thank you so much for reading, Name Warehouse, and I hope all of you have a wonderful rest of our day!

Sincerely,

-Delphina Moon
