October Celebabies- 2020

As a self proclaimed name nerd, I believe that a large portion of my duty here at the Warehouse includes reviewing some celebaby - or celebrity baby - names, hence why I’ve pulled together some of the latest high profile baby names and some expecting stars for review and prediction. Even though people often think of celebrity baby names as outrageous choices like Pilot Inspektor and North West, most of the time celebrities choose adorable and on trend choices. With enough gasoline already fueling the fire for a name gaining traction and trendiness, a celebaby birth announcement can provoke an explosion of popularity, and celebrity influence is a vital part of the baby naming community. To bring you up to date, I’ve begun going through and sharing my opinions on several of the most distinguished name reveals for the month, and predicting some possibilities for celebrities that have announced that they’re expecting. So, without further hesitation, let’s begin with rapper Usher’s first baby girl!

Sovereign Bo- Half Sister to Usher V “Cinco” and Naviyd Ely

Usher and his girlfriend Jenn Goichoechea recently had their first child together, a little girl to join half-brothers Cinco and Naviyd. The name they’ve bestowed on their daughter is Sovereign Bo, her first name a beautiful word name with spiritual meaning likely significant to the Christian rapper, and her middle a cute and brief mini moniker that balances out the heavier, lengthy Sovereign. Despite the name being positively stunning, it feels a little too exotic to capture the hearts of parents without a record deal. However, this word name meaning “supreme ruler” balances between exotic celebrity treasure and familiar sounds, a beautiful blend that fits seamlessly with her siblings. Sovereign has yet to rank in the top 1000, and although I don’t know if the new addition to Usher’s family will change that, I do expect it to put the name in the spotlight for some and maybe push a small shift up the charts for Sovereign.

Donald III- Brother to Legend and Drake

Childish Gambino, a rapper, musician, actor and more, has welcomed a third son with partner Michelle White. Although their previous sons, Legend and Drake, have received names with the utmost contemporary vibe, their latest baby boy bears the more classic name Donald. Why? I was initially surprised to see such a traditional name paired with Legend and Drake, but the story behind it is quite moving. Childish Gambino is actually Donald Glover Jr., named for his father. In 2018, Donald Glover Sr. passed away, and his son thought to honor him by passing down his meaningful moniker to his own little boy. Such a heartwarming story, but unfortunately, Donald’s revival time hasn’t arrived quite yet, meaning that Childish Gambino’s son may not have any measurable impact on the number of Donalds born in the next few years. This is especially considering the heated political scene at the moment in the US, with a controversial figure in office bearing the name, but the name does stand at #553.

Spencer- Brother to Katherine

Mindy Kaling, an actress and producer famous for starring in and writing The Office has unexpectedly announced the arrival of her second child, a baby boy. The brother to Katherine, a beautiful and evergreen classic, the baby was named Spencer, a charming vintage gem. It has been seeing some use on baby girls, which may hold parents back from following Mindy’s lead, but this offbeat alternative to Carter and Cooper is still a solid name for a boy. He currently ranks at #319, and I don’t doubt that he will start to climb in popularity in the next few years, regardless of Kaling’s new son. As for the sibset, quirky classic Spencer does fit well with the timeless Katherine, although I would personally expect a thoroughly classic boy name like Charles or James to be paired with Katherine. Preppy and sharp, Spencer is a lovely name to accompany a variety of styles, and is sure to have a big jump in the near future.

Atlas Roy- brother to Olivia Rose and Luca Reed

For a brother for Olivia and Luca, I would expect nothing less than something that screams “on trend 2020,” and I think Atlas fits the bill perfectly. Tyler Hubbard of the Florida Georgia Line, a country music duo, and his wife Hayley have recently welcomed their third child, a little one called Atlas Roy. A Greek name that has been buzzing around baby naming forums lately, Atlas feels like a perfect addition to siblings Olivia and Luca, both of which feel very modern and trendy like their brother. Another tie within the sibling names is the middle initial R, which appears in Rose, Reed, and Roy, a very sweet connection that’s noticeable but not blatantly obvious. Although Atlas’s exotic and unique sound makes him seem alienated from the high popularity of Olivia and Luca, he actually ranks at an astounding #226! Atlas was already taking off from the launch pad, and I think that the Hubbard baby has just given him a small boost.

Upcoming Celebabies:

And now for my favorite part of all: predicting some names for celebabies that are on their way! One celebaby boy that is coming in early 2021 will be welcomed by This Is Us actress Mandy Moore and her husband Taylor Goldsmith, and I’m thinking that the couple will choose an on trend, short and sweet name with a slight vintage twist for their upcoming son (Leo, Jude, Milo). As this is their first child, it’s difficult to figure out stylistic preferences, so I looked at their wedding to see black and white photos with a vintage lace dress, and drew my conclusions about their style from that as well as Taylor’s folk rock songs. Next up is Kelly Rowland and her husband Tim Witherspoon, who revealed in early October that they’re expecting a sibling for Titan, their son. With Titan’s powerful word name in mind, I chose some equally strong names for a little boy (Perseus, Evander, Solstice, Orion) and a baby girl (Sparrow, Xanthe, Artemis). Finally, Meghan Trainor has taken to Instagram to share the news that she’s expecting her first child early next year! Based on the very sassy nature of her songs, I chose some girl names that I think have a very ‘don’t mess with me’ vibe (Blair, Marlow, Harper) or even something super feminine paired with a more masculine middle (Millie/Emmy/Winnie James) whereas I’m a little stuck on boy names. I think something contemporary and sweet may suit her style (Finley, Bennett, Elliott). That’s all for this month, but you can check out past months if you particularly like this permanent installation in The Name Warehouse. I hope you enjoyed and maybe found some inspiration through these celebaby names!

Sincerely,

~Delphina Moon
