The ABCs of Popular Names: A Four Part Series

Thanksgiving is coming up, and I thought it'd be fitting to commemorate the holiday with a four part series surrounding one of my favorite parts of baby names: popularity. Watching and predicting name popularity is a thrilling activity, and it’s made even better when you’re right! I thought I’d give us an opportunity to watch and predict popularity patterns on a yearly basis. So what better than to launch an annual Thanksgiving series, each year featuring a new aspect of popularity in baby naming? Nothing really, which is why I’m doing it.

This year, I’m looking at the names that are truly chart toppers, ones that, while they are family favorites, are often passed by for their mainstream appeal. Specifically, the names most popular for their respective initials, hence the ABCs of popular baby names. Obviously, not all initials generate much use. For instance, Y isn’t a top commodity, which makes a list like this fairly irrelevant when actually trying to find equally popular names. However, it’s fun, so we’ll do it! In alphabetical order, I will go through 52 boy and girl names, predicting popularity, offering my opinions, meanings, and origins. But because 52 names in one article would be quite the headache, I’ve broken these articles up into four parts: A-M Girl Names, A-M Boy Names, N-Z Girl names, and N-Z Boy Names.

I hope you’ll join me for this series, as I can’t wait to dive into popularity again since the SSA data review took place a few months ago. See you for part one: A-M Girl Names!

Sincerely,

~Delphina Moon
