Whether it be part of old-fashioned Lucille or trending Luna, the Lou sound has endured throughout decades of naming trends, and it’s no question why. Spunky, sweet and playful, this sound has qualities that are always in style. This timeless syllable is a component in countless names, spans several decades, and appears in names for both genders, making it truly versatile. Hopefully, one of the following 10 names highlighting the Lou sound appeals to you!
Louie- This friendly name meaning “renowned warrior” peaked in 1901 at #230 but was later surpassed by alternative spellings Louis and Luis. Despite being a German name, Louis/Louie reads British due to Prince Louis of Cambridge. The young prince may also be the reason that both spellings of Louie made a leap up the charts from 2017 to 2018, the year the youngest child of the Duke and Duchess was born.
Lucian- This gentle boys’ name capitalizes on the intense fame of Lucas with his similar-yet-softer sound. A Latin name meaning “light,” Lucian seems to be hitting all the right notes with parents lately, climbing an astonishing 71 spots up the popularity charts last year. Pronounced either Loo-SEE-an or Loo-SHUN, I have high hopes for this saintly appellation.
Luella- One of the few -ella names that’s been left untouched by parents, Luella combines the pleasant sounds of Lulu and Ella into a southern yet vintage delight. To sweeten the deal, Luella has only just appeared back in the top 1000 after a fallout in 1955 two years worth of data ago, in 2017, making the chances of meeting a Luella over the age of 5 very scarce.
Tallulah- This Choctaw Native American moniker leaps right off the tongue with its many flowing Ls. Put in the public eye by several celebrity babies, Tallulah is one to watch. Not only does her meaning, “leaping water”, bring up gorgeous images of clear blue waves rolling up onto shore, but she’s also full of nicknames. Besides just Lulu, a viable option for any name containing Lou, she also shortens to Lula or Tally.
Luca- Italian names have definitely become very popular in the past couple years, and Luca is no exception. The Italian variation of Luke and Lucas, Luca feels like a fresher and trendier version of the sounds we used ten years ago. Meaning “bringer of life”, Luca just keeps getting more and more popular each year, currently placing at #106 as of 2018.
Lucy- At #51 in 2018, Lucy has definitely hopped onto the vintage trend train, accompanying similar cutesy vintage names Ivy and Alice. Although Lucy is most popular on her own, Lucinda or Lucille are possible full names if Lucy feels too nickname-y for you.
Lulu- Most popular as a full name in 1900, Lulu carries the same vintage aura as Lucy but is more often used as a nickname today. A short form for any of the names on this list or any names containing Lou, Lulu provides a sassy and spunky nickname for a girl who hasn’t quite grown into Lucille or Louisa yet.
Lucas- By far the most popular name on this list, Lucas ranks at #8 as of 2018 but managed to dodge a popularity profile when I did a series on the popularity of the top ten baby names in the nation. Peaking in 2018, this biblical moniker hasn’t left the top 100 since it entered the elusive group in 1993, making it a reliable choice that won’t go in and out of style quickly.
Luna- A celestial Lou- name that follows a pattern that’s endured for centuries, it’s no mystery how Luna has rocketed from obscurity to popularity. Not only is she a four letter, ending in -a name (think Emma, Ella, Aria, Nora), she’s also space-related (think Nova, Aurora), and, obviously, a Lou name. A name of Latin origin meaning “moon,” Luna is white hot in terms of trendiness.
Louisa- The feminine version of Louis, Louisa is just starting to become a fashionable option for a girl today. Feisty, vintage, and charming, this angelic appellation has literary and royal connections, making her a fitting name for various personalities.
I truly do think that Lou names will never go out of style. It’s a sound that feels both old-fashioned and current, trendy yet timeless. The Lou sound has the potential to be modern or vintage, which is part of what is so attractive about it. It appeals to so many different styles, so I hope you found a Lou name that suits your personal style.
Sincerely,
~Delphina Moon
