What Would You Do If This Happened To You?

Welcome to What Would You Do If This Happened To You? dear readers! I know that's quite the title, but all this is is a fun little naming game for my namenerds looking for a challenge. I'm not exactly sure if I will make more of these, but I'm hoping to get some community debate on this, which will heavily impact whether or not I'll keep making these. Below are two fictional stories of naming dilemmas that I'll think you'll like. At the end, you can choose what you think you would do in this case and potentially recommend and or debate with other readers (or me!) in the comments.

Unisex Or Honor Names?

Phoebe named her first daughter without doubt. Her husband, Otto loved the name she had treasured since 4th grade, and the middle name was an easy fix as well: the name of her late mother, Meg. And so Gray Margaret was born, and grew into her name happily. Phoebe’s family was delighted with the selection, and she felt as if she made the right decision. Never did it cross her mind that Gray was the wrong name.

Soon after Gray started Pre-K, Phoebe found herself expecting again, but this time, the name didn’t come so easily. They toiled and laboured over the name of their new little bundle of joy, but then Phoebe heard that her colleague named her son Finley, and convinced herself that Finn was the perfect name for the new addition to the family. And so Finn Caroline was born, and grew into her name happily. Phoebe felt like she could’ve done better, but Otto and family loved Finn's name, and it fit well with her family, so she left it alone.

And then Phoebe’s sister dies, claimed by the same disease as her mother, during Phoebe's third pregnancy, 5 years after Finn was born. Her sister’s name? Francesca. Phoebe loves her name because it reminds her of her sister, and wants to honor her memory and the bond the two of them shared. But Gray and Finn sound like modern boys names next to rare, vintage and girly Francesca. She wants to honor and commemorate her sister, but doesn’t know if Francesca is the way to go. Plus, she already has the name Rory Vivian set aside that her and Otto are ok with, but don’t particularly love. So her new daughter comes into the world answering to:

  1. Rory Francesca, a name all her own that matches the sibset and honors Phoebe’s sister… but that isn’t a name she loves.

  2. Francesca Vivian, a name that honors your sister and that is exactly what Phoebe wants… but doesn’t match the sibset.

  3. Francesca Rory “Frankie”, a name with a nickname and middle name that just barely blends in with the sibset, and honors Phoebe’s sister... but it doesn’t flow well.

  4. Other… comment down below the reasoning!

Pushy Nana

Bailey and Danica are expecting their fifth child, and they are fretting. Danicas mother, Nana Jasmine, just can't seem to let go of the idea of a baby named after her. Every time she discovers that Dani is expecting again, she's at her throat, forcing a promise to name the child after her if it's a girl. So far, Dani and Bailey have been able to easily sidestep Nana Jasmine by having all boys, Axel, Mason, Cole, and Ryder. Their boys were easy to name without the complication of Nana Jasmine, although she makes sure to sigh heavily when they bring home another boy. But now, Dani is expecting a little girl, and they are torn. At first, they tell Nana Jasmine that they aren't revealing the gender this time, but that only holds her off for so long. Pretty soon, she decides to bribe them by buying them an entire catalog of beautiful crib accessories, then begs them to name the child after her. When they lie and say that they already have a name picked out, Nana Jasmine leaves, returning the gifts and calling them ungrateful.

Dani and Bailey like Zena and Rowan for a daughter, but they're worried that Zena is too rare and exotic, and Rowan will blend in too well with the boys. They want a name that matches the cool vibes of their daughter's brothers, but they also want her name to be distinctly feminine, as Bailey isn't happy with a unisex name. As the due date looms over them, Dani and Bailey begin to consider just calling their daughter Jasmine. Nana might be quiet about it if they ever have another child, and they aren't coming up with anything regardless. They both feel burned out, manipulated, and stressed as they scramble for a solution. Frustrated, they tell Nana Jasmine that the baby is in fact a girl, and after days of wearing them down and pestering them, they at last cave in. They will name their daughter Jasmine. Then they meet a little girl in Ryder's daycare called Everleigh, and they immediately know that it's the one. But they've already promised Nana Jasmine that they'll name their daughter Jasmine, after her. Their daughter's name is:

  1. Everleigh Jasmine, a name that Dani and Bailey love, but that still at least partially keeps their promise to Nana. However, neither parties are completely satisfied.

  2. Everleigh Grace, the name both parents are enamored with. Who even cares about Nana Jasmine? She's annoying anyway!

  3. Jasmine Nadine, the exact name of Nana Jasmine. A promise is a promise, and they can't ruin their relationship with their mother/mother-in-law over a broken naming promise.

  4. Other... comment down below the reasoning!

Now, the decision is up to you! Let me know in the comments section what you think is the right decision for Phoebe and Otto’s and Bailey and Danica's family, and why!
